Is financial freedom worth your sanity?

March 21st, 2014 at 05:02 pm

At times, it is. I've alluded to my housing situation. I live in the finished basement of a townhouse owned by the family I nanny for. In exchange for 10 babysitting hrs/wk plus the household's laundry, I live there rent-free.

While it's a great arrangement 90% of the time, there are moments where I question whether it's worth my mental health. Last night, for instance, what was supposed to be a half-hour of getting the boys (8 and 5) to bed turned into an hour and a half battle of wills.

It's nights like that that make me question whether I want to continue the arrangement. Is it worth the occasional so-annoyed-I-could-scream feeling to have a LOT more money to throw at my debt? For me, it's a resounding YES!

Life with kids will challenge your sanity! Housing is a big cost for most people. As long as you can stand it, it will benefit you long term.

The thing about it is that sacrifices like that should ideally be rather "short-term", in exchange for "subtantial long-term benefits". I am sure that the less than ideal times bode well for keeping motivated.

Ah, I remember 5 & 8 y/o boys are a handful and you will need to use your sense of humor as your best tool going forward as you can't let on that they are 'getting to you.' I recall using bribery as well for little guys pushing at the boundaries. If your quarters are pretty and meet your needs it helps to stay focussed on your goals like paying off your car since the interest rate is ghastly

I've often thought about that, as well. If you don't have financial freedom, you might not have your sanity!

Snafu: They are a handful indeed. Last night, they were great. It's like a strange roller coaster.

    Bluebird: So true!!
