Paid Marriott CC and question about statement closing

October 19th, 2015 at 04:31 pm

I paid off the Marriott card with DF's money. Our cycle closes on Friday, and I wanted to charge all the wedding deposits which we're paying on Thursday. Should I just pay it off immediately even before it actually posts since I don't want it to reflect in the statement. DF is considering a car purchase at the end of the year, and since this reflects on his credit as well, I'd like to start showing minimal utilization.

Yes - you can make the payment when you charge, or even before you make the charges. Then there won't be a balance reported.

Is there any reason the deposits need to be made Thursday? If you make them Friday it will give you more leeway. The thing about doing it the day before is who knows when the charges will show up, and how long it takes them to process a payment, etc. Even if you are set on taking it care of and paying it off ASAP (which is all good) it may be cleaner just to do it Friday.

MM, we're meeting all of vendors on Thursday. While I could conceivably do the deposits after, I'd rather take care of it with them present, so there's no confusion.

In that case, just pay them off ASAP. Thursday payments should be fine for Friday closing, but it wouldn't hurt to send payment to the credit card sooner if you know the amounts.

I would guess those Thursday payments may not post before Friday. Just pay once they post. Many cards I have won't let you make a payment if there is no balance, even with a pending balance.

@ccfree - that is interesting. I've never had any problems paying extra on a credit card (paying more than balance due, which I do often on all of our cards), but maybe because they do have some balance on them already?

The problem with waiting for the payments to post is it will probably be too late to make the payment before the closing. But if you can't pre-pay, then maybe this is not the month to worry about utilization. There is always next month.

Both Chase and B of A will credit the payment as stated, but the charge often shows up on the statement. It may because the ACH transfer shows up on their books a day later.

Lots of cards will not accept payment without at least a pending balance. Some won't accept the payment until the charge is no longer pending.

Thanks everyone. It looks like I'll just try to pay it after I put the deposits on and hope for the best. As MM says, I may have to start showing much lower utilization next month.
